Week 5 of 6 · Speech and rhythm

Music and conversation

Music and conversation are different from environmental noise — they have structure and emotional content. For people whose hyperacusis is paired with reduced sound tolerance for speech, this is the week the bottleneck breaks.

Move to week-5 ladder level

Daily

Step the LadderPlayer up one more notch. By this point the level should feel like a normal background fan rather than something quiet.

Do today: 45 minutes a day at week-5 level.

Music at the edge of comfort

Daily

Pick one piece of music — not your favourite, something neutral — and play it at the loudest volume that is just below uncomfortable. Listen for ten minutes, twice a day. Use real speakers, not headphones. Headphones over-isolate.

Do today: Two 10-minute music blocks.

A conversation in a slightly noisy room

Daily

A coffee with someone, in a café at moderate hours. The aim is fifteen minutes of conversation where you are not straining to hear and not avoiding. Sit with your better ear toward the conversation.

Do today: One conversation in a moderately noisy place.

If music at the edge of comfort produces an immediate stab of pain rather than mere discomfort, that may indicate pain hyperacusis (noxacusis), which needs a specialist. Discomfort is normal; pain is a signal to step back.
