The orderly, frequency-by-frequency map of pitch in the auditory system. The cochlea, brainstem nuclei and auditory cortex are all tonotopically organised: neighbouring cells respond to neighbouring pitches. Many tinnitus theories — including the central gain and reorganisation theories — depend on this map shifting when input from a particular pitch goes missing.
