Damage to the inner ear caused by drugs or chemicals. The biggest offenders are aminoglycoside antibiotics (gentamicin), platinum-based chemotherapy (cisplatin), high-dose aspirin, some loop diuretics, and quinine. Damage may be permanent. If you have new tinnitus and have just started a medication, do not stop on your own — speak to your prescriber, who can often switch you to an alternative.
