A condition in which one of the tiny middle-ear bones, the stapes, becomes fused to the surrounding bone by abnormal new growth. It causes progressive conductive hearing loss, often with tinnitus, usually starting in young adulthood. It is one of the few causes of tinnitus that has a surgical fix — stapedectomy — and so it is worth ruling out with an ENT if loss has come on slowly without obvious noise exposure.
